The inflammation of the lining of the lungs and chest cavity that is characteristic of pleurisy can be incredibly painful.

Unfortunately, many individuals who develop pleurisy also have serious underlying conditions as well, such as cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, asbestos-related lung disease, and lupus.

As such, research related to pleurisy can approach it from a number of angles, including how to prevent its development in relation to other conditions, how to most effectively manage the pain that results once it develops, and ways to prevent complications from developing.

What Will Pleurisy Clinical Trials Be Like?

When participating in a clinical trial for pleurisy, a few common tests and procedures may be involved; however, the ultimate design of the particular study will determine which specific procedures you will undergo.

Because pleurisy can develop on its own as a result of a lung infection, or in relation to an underlying condition, the exact type of trial will depend on which group of patients the researchers want to study.

However, most studies will involve one or more pleurisy-specific procedures. A chest examination during which the study doctor listens to your lungs with a stethoscope will likely be performed. Blood tests to determine levels of bacteria-fighting white blood cells may also be done.

You may undergo a CT scan of the chest, which is a non-invasive imaging procedure that takes detailed pictures of your lungs and other internal organs.

You might also have an ultrasound of the chest for the same purposes. A procedure known as thoracentisis may also be performed, during which fluid is removed from the space between the outside lining of your lungs and the chest wall.

  • A study designed to investigate the effectiveness of newly-developed anti-inflammatory medications at treating the inflammation associated with pleurisy.
  • A study designed to determine genetic characteristics of individuals with common pleurisy-related underlying conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis, to better estimate which individuals are at the greatest risk of developing pleurisy.
  • A study designed to determine how specific environmental or occupational exposures can lead to the development of pleurisy, and which personal characteristics make some individuals more susceptible than others.
