When participating in a clinical trial designed to investigate some aspect related to bronchiectasis, a few common tests and procedures may be involved; however, the ultimate design of the particular study will determine which specific procedures you will undergo.

You will most likely undergo a computed tomography scan (CT, or “CAT” scan) of the chest. CT scans are the most common test used to diagnose bronchiectasis and for determining the extent and location of the damage it causes to the lungs. CT scans are high-tech imaging procedures that provide detailed pictures of areas inside the body, much like an x-ray.

You may also undergo a chest x-ray as well, which can help to reveal or monitor heart damage. In addition, you may also undergo any one or a combination of the following tests: blood tests to detect or monitor infections; sputum (spit/phlegm) culture to detect the presence of bacteria or fungi in your lungs; lung function tests; and tests to detect the presence of cystic fibrosis.

You may also undergo a bronchoscopy, which is a procedure in which your doctor inserts a flexible tube with a light on the end through your nose or mouth and into your airways. This helps your doctor to see the inside of your airways and any damage that is present.
