Clinical Trials for Thyroid DisordersGeneral Purpose:

Thyroid disorders most commonly include hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, and thyroid hormone resistance. Clinical trials for thyroid disorder intend to improve the scientific understanding of these disorders in order to improve prevention methods, diagnostic measures, and the management of your thyroid disorder.

These trials will evaluate the safety and efficacy of pharmaceuticals for those suffering from thyroid disorder. If you volunteer to enroll in a clinical trial, you will have access to new drugs that are being evaluated before becoming available to the public.

In order to better understand this host of disorders, observational clinical trials will attempt to better understand such aspects as the natural history, clinical presentation, and genetic component of thyroid disorders.

Studies may also examine the affect of thyroid hormone medications on fat and cholesterol metabolism, regulations of blood sugar, and thyrotropin secretion in patients who have had their thyroid glands removed. Studies of this nature will aid in the improvement of pharmacotherapies for regulating blood sugar and cholesterol levels in patients with thyroid disorders.

Some studies may even delve into the affect that bariatric surgery induced weight loss has on thyroid function, with particular focus on post-operative changes in thyroid disorders. Clinical trials may also specifically study a pregnant patient population, because there has been an association between thyroid disease and adverse outcomes, both during pregnancy and in childhood development.

These trials may attempt to evaluate the improvement of thyroid disease treatment during pregnancy to decrease the possibility of adverse effects. Whether you have hypothyroidism or are pregnant and suffering from a thyroid disease, there are innumerable opportunities for gaining both personal benefit and advancing scientific knowledge of thyroid disorders.

What will Clinical Trials for Thyroid Disorders be like?

Prior to enrolling in a clinical trial, potential participants must first undergo enrollment Clinical Trials for Thyroid Disordersscreenings to determine eligibility. These criteria will depend upon the specific disorder being studied, as well as the cohort the study chooses to focus on. These criteria are put in place to promote the validity of the research results.

They are also present to avoid undue risk, which may, for example, result if a participant is taking a medication that might have a detrimental interaction with a trial treatment. Studies intending to evaluate hormone treatment in those without thyroid glands will require participants to have previously undergone some extent of thyroid gland removal.

Candidates will go through extensive screenings, including medical history, physical exam, blood tests, electrocardiogram, neck ultrasound, etc. If the trial is focusing on a specific demographic, then the criteria will exclude everyone but those belonging to that particular group – such as interventional trials for pregnant women or correlational trials post weight loss procedure.

Typical Thyroid Disorder Clinical Trial Protocol:

Observational trials will conduct extensive evaluations of patients with thyroid function disorders. These may include medical histories, physical exams, endocrine tests, TRH tests, thyroid nuclear medicine scans, X-ray, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and other standard diagnostic procedures.

In post-operative trials, thyroid morphological changes will be evaluated, as well as BMI, thyroid hormone levels, and thyroxin substitution. Interventional studies will randomly assign participants into different treatment groups, as well as a control group, and will conduct evaluation screenings throughout the duration of the trial at specific time points to determine the efficacy of such treatments.

In trials attempting to determine the effect of treatments on adverse outcomes that occur during pregnancy and the neonatal period, relevant outcome measures will be taken. Offspring may undergo Intelligence Quotient and Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children to assess the efficacy of treatments in comparison to control groups.
